Brian Burke transitioned from professional hockey to law, graduating from Harvard Law School in 1981 before beginning a distinguished career in hockey management. He held executive positions with the Vancouver Canucks, Hartford Whalers, Anaheim Ducks, Toronto Maple Leafs, Calgary Flames and Pittsburgh Penguins, as well as a senior leadership role with the NHL.
Among his greatest accomplishments were orchestrating the Canucks’ selection of twins Daniel and Henrik Sedin in the 1999 NHL Draft and building the Anaheim Ducks team that won the 2007 Stanley Cup. He also helped establish the tradition of Stanley Cup champions donating a championship ring to the Hockey Hall of Fame.
Internationally, Burke played key roles with USA Hockey, including serving as General Manager of the silver medal-winning 2010 U.S. Olympic Men's Team. He later became the first Executive Director of the Professional Women's Hockey League (PWHL) in 2023.
Recognized for his leadership and contributions to hockey, Burke received the Lester Patrick Trophy in 2008, was inducted into the United States Hockey Hall of Fame in 2023, and was named an Honoured Member of the Hockey Hall of Fame in the Builder Category.
