Born in Shawinigan Falls, Quebec, Jacques Plante will forever be remembered as a remarkable athlete and a dedicated goaltender. A product of the Montreal system, he was a well traveled player who joined the Habs in 1952 as a back-up netminder. He became a starter in 1954 when he tallied 8 shutouts. Jacques played with Montreal through the 1963 season, then was traded to the New York Rangers. After only two seasons there, he retired, but was lured back into the game by the St. Louis Blues in 1968. Despite three inactive seasons and his 40 years of age, he and partner Glenn Hall combined to win the Vezina Trophy as the NHL's premier goaltenders. Plante moved on to Toronto and Boston to finish his NHL career. He played one final season with Edmonton in the WHA. In all, Plante won the Vezina Trophy 7 times, the Hart Trophy once and 6 Stanley Cuprings. He was also an All-Star 7 times. Plante made his mark in hockey history by being the first goalie to wear a face mask in every game. Although not the first to wear one, he refused to play without it after suffering a serious facial injury. He was also known for his aggressive style of play and "roaming" antics that saw him coming out of the net frequently. Today we remember Jacques Plante as an innovator who's induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame is well deserved.
