Legends of Hockey | Collectors Card | Emile "Cat" Francis
Couldn't load pickup availability
Known as the "Cat" during his playing days in the NHL, he is one of very few men in professional sports to have held almost every position available during his career. He began as a goal tender in Chicago in 1946 and embarked on a 46 year journey that would find him acting as player, coach, GM, VP, and President of many different teams. In all, he played for 12 pro teams before retiring at the end of 1959-60 season to coach a junior team sponsored by the New York Rangers, in Guelph Ontario. Two seasons later he was back up to "the show" as an assistant manager and eventually GM of the Rangers. Throughout the next ten seasons he would serve three terms as coach while holding the GM position until 1976 when he moved to St. Louis to act as Executive VP, coach and GM. It was apparent that Francis liked having control over his clubs and his style of management earned him the Hockey New Executive of the Year award and the Lester Patrick award for his contribution to hockey in the USA. Emile was also the founder of a scholarship fund for hockey players to attend college.
