The man after whom the Baker Rink, the Hobey Baker Trophy and the Hobey Baker Memorial award are named is a legend to the sport of hockey. Born in Pennsylvania, Baker attended St. Paul's school in Concord New Hampshire before coming to Princeton in 1910. It was here that Baker established himself as the greatest college hockey player of all time, dominating every game he played and frustrating his opponents. His skating and stick handling skulls were unmatched as he led Princeton to a record of 27-7 over three years and three Intercollegiate League Championships. Baker was not a only a standout on the ice. He was also proficient in golf, track, swimming, gymnastics and football, where he set a single season scoring record of 92 points that stood for more than 60 years. After graduating in 1914, Hobey joined St. Nichols hockey team and led them to the Ross Cup Championship. After such a youthful and glorious hockey career Hobey joined the United States Airforce as a captain and commander of the 141st squadron and tragically died while making a test flight in 1918 over France. For all his accomplishments Hobey Baker is a member of the Hockey Hall of Fame and is immortalized with the Hobey Baker award, a trophy given to the outstanding USA college hockey player at the end of each season.
