A strong, silent Scot, Frank Calder proved to be the perfect choice as president when the National Hockey League formed in1917. His astute guidance and unruffled manner, along with his experience as secretary of the old National Hockey Association, were just a part of what made him the right man for the job. A keen follower of sport, typical of his country background, the late president gravitated to hockey in quick style and his knowledge of athletics made it easy for him to adjudicate player hassles. In the formative years of the NHL, Calder's confidence and firm hand served to guide through many a rule change and much bickering. He sat at the the head of the league a calm, firm executive, establishing for the NHL, the stature that it now enjoys. To commemorate his years of service, the Calder Memorial Trophy is awarded annually to the NHL's leading rookie.
