Foster born in Toronto in 1902, his affection for sport was apparently in early in his childhood. He went on to become an inter-collegiate boxing champ while attending the University of Toronto. In March 1923, Hewitt aired on of the first hockey broadcasts ever from Toronto's Mutual Street Arena. Soon he became the eyes and ears of radio listeners and tv viewers across Canada and would down in history as one of the greatest sportscasters. His classic voice and narrative style was unmistakable as it echoed form the gondola high above at the Maple Leaf Gardens. He was respected for his in-depth knowledge of hockey and extended his career by calling thousands of NHL, World and Olympic championship games from all over the world. He also described important contests in Canada and USA in almost all other major sports. His length of service far exceeded that of any other sportscaster in the world and his contribution to the growth and development of hockey has been so extensive that his name is famous throughout the world.
