Bernie earned the name Boom Boom for his renowned use of the slapshot in professional hockey. With this powerful new weapon, he terrorized NHL goalies throughout the 1950's and 60's for 16 years. During his tenure as a player, he played in the shadow of his famous teammate "Rocket" Richard. Nevertheless, he won the Hart Trophy as league MVP during the 1960-61 season and claimed two Art Ross Trophies and the Calder Trophy. As a member of the famous Montreal Canadiens, he won six Stanley Cup Championships and was selected as an All-Star three times. Bernie retired in 1964 from Montreal but came back after missing two seasons to join the New York Rangers in 1966. There, he scored a credible 22 goals and accumulated 63 points in two years before hanging up his skates for good. He then became coach of the Rangers and a scout for them until taking over as head coach of the new expansion Atlanta Flames in 1972. Many modern day players may not realize Boom Boom's contribution to the game, but one thing is for sure the game was never the same after Bernie came along.
