Sid Abel gained fame as a member of Detroit's famous "Production Line" with fellow Hall of Famers Gordie Howe and Ted Lindsay. Sid's abilities as a team leader became evident very early in his career as he was named Red Wings' team captain at the age of 24. In 1949 he won the Hart Trophy as league MVP and was an All-Star twice in his career. Abel belonged to three Stanley Cup winning teams while with Detroit, then left in 1952 and moved to Chicago to pursue a role as player and coach. There he lead the Blackhawks to their first Stanley Cup playoff berth in nine seasons. Abel retired from playing in 1954 to become the color commentator for the Red Wings' televised games, but was summoned behind the bench to coach the Red Wings in the 1957-58 season when Jimmy Skinner, coach at the time, fell ill. In 10 1/2 seasons, his team made the Stanley Cup playoffs seven times and won their division championship once. Abel finished his NHL career as General Manager of Detroit, after he replaced the famous Jack Adams in 1962 . Today, Sid Abel enjoys his retirement while residing in Florida but still travels to attend autograph signing sessions throughout North America.
