Stan Mikita was one of the first great European hockey players to have excelled in the National Hockey League. Born in Czechoslovakia in 1940, he immigrated to Canada (St. Catherines, Ont.) with his aunt and uncle in 1948. At only eight years of age, he was forced to adopt a new culture and language. He quickly picked up on the game of hockey as a youngster, making his way into the NHL with the Chicago Blackhawks in 1958 at the age of 18. Surprisingly, he stayed with the Blackhawks organization throughout his 22 year NHL career. Mikita was the first player ever to win the Art Ross, Hart and Lady Byng Trophies in one single season (1966-67). As if that weren't enough, he repeated the same accomplishment the next year! An unbelievable feat considering the quality of players in the NHL at the time.., Bobby Hull, Gordie Howe and Bobby Orr just to name a few. Stan also won the Art Ross Trophy two other times, the Patrick Award once and was selected as an All-Star eight times. Most important of all, Mikita was part of the 1960-61 Stanley Cup Champion Chicago Blackhawks. Another interesting item about Stan was that he was the first player to introduce the curved stick to the NHL.
