Lord Stanley of Preston was the Governor General of Canada from 1888 to 1893. In his final year in office, he donated a trophy to the championship hockey club in Canada. That trophy later became known as the Stanley Cup! The trophy was initially awarded to amateur teams, but later became a symbol of professional hockey supremacy. Stanley was honored by the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1945 as an “honored builder”.
This black & white plaque features a photo of Lord Stanley Preston and a background history in both English and French.
